“Turkey, especially Cappadocia, has always been a dream destination for me. It’s one of those places that I’ve always wanted to visit at least once in my life. From the moment I landed in Istanbul, to exploring Cappadocia, Izmir, and Bodrum, I made sure to soak in everything that Turkey has to offer. But the highlight of my trip, the ultimate experience, was the hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia at sunrise. I can still feel the rush of excitement and the overwhelming emotions I felt as I soared through the sky, witnessing the breath-taking sights below me.

Throughout my journey, I stayed in four luxurious 5-star hotels, and I can honestly recommend all of them. However, my absolute favourite was The Argos Hotel in Cappadocia, where I had the unique opportunity to stay in a cave room. It was truly an extraordinary experience, and I was thrilled to check it off my bucket list. Watch my video below where you can follow my journey…

Location

All the things you need to know

Envisioning bygone eras in Istanbul with relics of the Byzantine and Ottoman civilisations peppered throughout this charismatic metropolis. Gazing at the Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia as the magical call to prayer echoes across the city never ceases to enchant visitors.

The hotel

Steeped in opulence and history, the Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at the Bosphorus is one glamorous bolthole. In true Four Seasons fashion, this hotel is elegantly styled and decked out with the finest facilities. What makes it truly special, however, is that it was once an 19th-century Ottoman palace and still stands in all its royal glory on the banks of the glittering Bosphorus waterfront.

Rooms

Vaulted, decorative ceilings and traditional art are the defining features of the gorgeous rooms. From the simpler rooms to the downright decadent suites, they are all stylishly decorated in neutral colour palettes and marble finishes. Be sure to request a room with tall windows looking down over the river or across to the hills of Asia.

Food & Drink

Opt for delicious Mediterranean fare on the terrace overlooking the water at Aqua, or traditional Turkish dishes at the summer pop-up restaurant Ocakbasi. Alternatively, fresh fish and grilled kebabs are served at The Club, and the Yali Lounge offers afternoon tea or champagne and cocktails at sundown.

Facilities

The hotel’s expansive waterfront terrace, complete with manicured gardens, a large pool and unbeatable views, is where you’ll be whiling away most of your stay. Additionally, unwind at the 2,100-square-metre basement spa, which has traditional hammams and an exquisite pool – there’s even soothing music playing underwater.

Experiences

Glide down the Bosphorus in a private boat from the hotel and admire the yalis (wooden mansions) along the way to the home of interior designer Serdar Gulgun, who will guide you through Ottoman art history. Back at the hotel, take advantage of its excellent position and spy porpoises from the waterfront terrace.

The hotel

A stay at Argos in Cappadocia promises an exceptional experience in the most extraordinary setting. Once a monastery, then a linseed oil factory, and now a hotel, the 2,000 years of Argos’s history is part of what makes it so unique. The original caves have been transformed into beautiful, luxurious rooms and suites, while retaining their rustic, historic charm.

Rooms

The rooms and suites are spread across seven mansions, connected by underground tunnels. Stone walls, arches, cosy fireplaces and antique Turkish rugs are just a few of their special touches, alongside Nespresso coffee machines, Bose sound systems and mini-bars, as well as deluxe bathrooms with Molton Brown toiletries. Many have a private terrace or garden: opt for a suite spread over two levels with your own cave pool to sink into.

Food & Drink

If you’re in search of a hearty breakfast with a view to swoon over, the hotel’s Seki restaurant is where to make for. Devour fresh fruit, homemade breads and creamy Turkish cheese on the terrace or under the stone arches, and enjoy dishes made with fresh produce harvested from the gardens and nearby slopes. Dinner is just as exquisite, with scrumptious Turkish cuisine perfectly complemented by a glass of the house red, Kalecik Karasi. The award-winning wine cellar stocks an impressive range of handpicked wines, and the bar serves a wide variety of drinks.

Learn the secrets of local recipes on a cooking class, and take a piece of Cappadocia home with you.

Facilities

Head to the atmospheric spa, which has a Turkish bath and a massage room, for some blissful relaxation alongside gorgeous valley views, or unwind with a yoga or meditation session.

While away an afternoon in the lounge or by the pool with a cocktail: bathed in sunlight, this is a prime spot for admiring sweeping views of Mount Erciyes and across Cappadocia. Have a sunrise breakfast here while watching the hot air balloons take to the skies.

Experiences

The hotel has its own atmospheric chapel where you can enjoy Sufi, classical and jazz concerts. Around the village, you’ll find Cappadocia’s highest point at Uchisar’s natural rock citadel, offering a truly special panorama of the area. Further afield, marvel at the Byzantine frescoes in the Goreme Open Air Museum, or venture through the subterranean cities of Kaymakli and Derinkuyu.

Explore these epic landscapes on foot, bike, horse or car, from jeep safaris to moonlight walks. Meanwhile, if you’ve ever dreamt of soaring to the skies in a hot air balloon, Cappadocia is the place to do it – and you can enjoy private flights. Wake at the crack of dawn to drink in unforgettable vistas of the mountains, cave villages and fairy chimneys at sunrise, not to mention the kaleidoscope of balloons punctuating the azure sky.

The hotel

A charmer in all respects, this is the darling of Alaçati’s luxury hotels. Housed in an old Greek cinema, the original six stone houses have been seamlessly enhanced with modern renovations that accentuate Alavya’s antiquity and romantic Turkish essence.

Rooms

Beautifully imagined by prominent designer Hakan Ezer, the 25 rooms at Alavya Hotel each exude a special, unique charm. You’ll find a private patio in some, and Jacuzzis in others; some with four-poster beds, others steeped with high-beamed ceilings: all are spacious and exquisitely decorated.

Food & Drink

Alavya know the way to our hearts, with a breakfast buffet to relish at their superb restaurant, Mitu. Home-made pastries and breads, local cheeses and ripe fruit, all make for an unbeatable way to start the day; and of course they follow it up spectacularly with lip-smacking lunches and dinners, too.

Facilities

Alavya is a haven for the health-conscious: a spa, lap pool and yoga classes are just a few of the facilities that feature here.

Experiences

When you’re not taking it easy in Alavya, you’ll be down on Ilica beach with the wind in your hair as you zip along on a windsurf – or kitesurf, perhaps. In fact, the hotel’s manager is a professional windsurfer, so you might want to get a couple of tips from her! And if you’re not the water-sport type, the cobbled streets of Alaçati are packed with delightful restaurants, cafes and shops to dive into.

The hotel

The Six Senses Kaplankaya sits on a hillside overlooking the Aegean in Bodrum, amidst landscapes of olive and cypress trees. The private beach setting, with soft sand and blue sea, alongside the stunning surroundings of mountain ranges, coastal lowlands and protected bays, only adds to the tranquillity of this serene luxury hotel.

Rooms

The rooms, suites and villas are stylish and spacious, with custom-made furnishings, marble bathrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows and a private balcony or terrace where you can relax and admire the views. Some come with private pools and lush gardens with olive trees and terraces which are the perfect setting for a meal.

Food & Drink

The cuisine is inspired by the hotel’s wellness theme, with a range of healthy (and delicious) options. Menus take inspiration from the Aegean and the Mediterranean and feature fresh produce from the hotel’s own organic gardens as well as the local fish markets, From wood-fired pizzas at the Sage & Sea restaurant to fresh seafood and handcrafted Turkish mezes at Meze by the Sea, where you can dine by the water. Enjoy a drink or two at the beach bar as the sun sets.

Facilities

The hotel’s spa certainly has the wow factor – it is one of Europe’s largest spas and is huge. It has an indoor pool, hammams, a beauty salon and a hydrothermal area with a salt grotto, a crystal steam room, a Finnish sauna and a hydrotherapy pool. Health experts are on hand to help you make the most of the integrated approach to wellness, which blends science with therapies.

There is also a fitness centre – one of the biggest fitness centres we’ve ever seen – with personal trainers to help you achieve your goals, as well as a lap pool, basketball and tennis courts and a fully-equipped gym.

Experiences

Indulge in water-sports such as windsurfing and kayaking, or if you prefer land-based adventures, go cycling or enjoy one of the guided hikes. The hotel is also fantastic for families – it has a dedicated beach for children, as well as a children’s club offering a range of activities.

For history buffs, there are also several historic archaeological sites nearby, such as the temples of Apollo and Artemis.
