What’s the difference between Hurtigruten & a standard Fjord cruise, such as P&O?

“Hurtigruten Coastal voyages are working ships, that not only take tourists, but also locals, transport, cargo, post and supplies to the towns and villages along the fabulous Norwegian coastline.  It’s a relaxed way of travelling, stopping at over 30 towns/villages along the way, some for only half an hour or so.  At the points of interest, the cruise does stop either overnight, or arrives in the morning and departs afternoon/evening and there are plenty of options to get off the ship and explore either by foot, or by one of their excursions. It is a working ship, but there are onboard lectures to attend, presentations and expedition leaders who are knowledgeable about the flora and fauna/history of the areas visited.   During Northern lights season, an announcement is set off when they appear and notifications can be turned off overnight if you don’t want to be woken.

The cabins are small, functional and comfortable, but not luxurious.  I recommend the Arctic superior cabins if budget allows, as these have double beds and tea/coffee making facilities.  They also have some Expedition suites available too, but none have balconies. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the price and the restaurant was large with a good standard and variety of food available.  Drinks aren’t included and being Norway, any beer or wine etc., are all in excess of £10 per drink.   Some of the ships have a heated pool and hot tub, which even in the winter are fun to use, though chilly to get to!

The cruise suited me, as I don’t like being over organised or need shows and constant entertainment.   It’s not a cruise for someone who wants luxury or lots of entertainment and activities onboard.  The scenery is the main attraction plus wildlife/bird watching; we even had Orca playing in the harbour on our first night stop. I loved every moment and am going to go again, hopefully to see the midnight sun next time as we went in winter.” ~ Lesley
