Our Five Minutes with… this month is with Merve Ozkok, Founder of Detabi Travel.

How and why did you create Detabi Travel?

Since childhood, I’ve harboured a deep-seated dream of connecting with people from diverse cultures, exploring new places, and savouring the delights of unfamiliar flavours. Taking my first steps in the travel industry marked a pivotal moment in turning these dreams into reality.

Reflecting on my life, my journey in tourism reads like a captivating fairy tale spanning 14 enchanting years, with a remarkable three-year chapter set in Japan. It’s been a real-life adventure, complete with challenges, social movements, natural disasters, and life’s ebbs and flows. However, the most magical aspect has been forming lifelong friendships with kindred spirits around the world—individuals who share the same passions and dreams.

With the dawn of 2023, a new chapter began—an exhilarating adventure that led me to courageously start my own company, paving the way for my dreams to soar. While searching for a brand name encapsulating the essence of fresh beginnings, uncharted paths, and exciting journeys, the Japanese characters representing “going for a travel” came to mind. Thus, “Detabi Travel” was born—a name brimming with the promise of new experiences. Our logo depicts the wondrous journey of a phoenix exploring the world, and we eagerly anticipate extending a warm welcome to our cherished guests from every corner of the globe. Our heartfelt slogan, “A trip to Breathtaking Moments,” perfectly encapsulates the essence of what we offer…

Any news?

As 2023 drew to a close, I had the opportunity to visit Montenegro, and I fell in love with the country. Can you believe it’s just a 1-hour and 20-minute flight away from Istanbul? Suddenly, you’re in the heart of the Balkans. I’m planning to create new programs that combine Turkey with Montenegro in 2024.

Northern Cyprus beckons with its luxurious resort hotels and vibrant casinos, but its true allure lies in its rich historical sites. From the ancient ruins of Salamis to the medieval Bellapais Abbey, and the picturesque Kyrenia harbour with its Venetian castle, the region is a treasure trove of historical and cultural wonders. The Karpas Peninsula’s unspoiled beaches and the Five Finger Mountains’ scenic trails offer both tranquillity and adventure, making Northern Cyprus a captivating destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

How are you dealing with the latest disruptions?

There is the most beautiful sentence I have ever read:

“When you can’t change the direction of the wind, adjust your sails to reach your destination. For it is not the storms you encounter, but whether you can bring the ship to harbour that matters to the world.”

So, we simply need to believe in the better days ahead and strive for excellence in every aspect of our lives. The rest is assured by the universe 🙂

What’s your favourite destination?

Cappadocia
Cappadocia

Without a doubt, Cappadocia holds a special place in my heart. Its mesmerizing landscape of fairy chimneys, ancient cave dwellings, and breathtaking hot air balloon rides create an otherworldly experience. The rich history embedded in its rock formations and underground cities fascinates me endlessly. Moreover, the unique cave hotels that blend modern luxury with ancient architecture offer an unparalleled stay, providing an immersive experience unlike anywhere else. The unique blend of cultural heritage, the warmth of the locals, and the sheer magic that envelops every corner make Cappadocia an exceptional and unforgettable destination for me.

Any travel tips?

Turkey boasts incredibly beautiful seasonal events. For instance, visiting Istanbul in April during the Tulip Festival promises a mesmerizing experience amidst breathtaking tulip displays. In May, Isparta hosts the enchanting Rose Festival, still relatively local and rich in cultural charm. Additionally, July brings forth the Lavender Festival in Isparta too. If you plan a trip to Turkey during these periods, don’t miss the opportunity to add these delightful events to your calendar!

Istanbul, Ephesus, Cappadocia, and Pamukkale stand as the must-visit destinations for first-time travellers exploring Turkey. However, for those who’ve already experienced these treasures, I have some alternative suggestions:

Gobeklitepe, Sanliurfa: Often referred to as the zero point in time, Gobeklitepe is recognized as the oldest temple in the world, dating back to over 12,000 years ago. This archaeological site offers a fascinating glimpse into ancient civilization, featuring intricately carved stone pillars and remarkable craftsmanship.

Mardin: Nestled in southeastern Turkey, Mardin is renowned for its stunning architecture, including intricately designed mosques and churches, along with its captivating blend of cultures. The city’s old town, perched on a hill, offers breathtaking views and a serene atmosphere.

Mount Nemrut: Home to colossal stone heads and statues believed to be from the 1st century BC, Mount Nemrut provides an awe-inspiring archaeological site set amidst a stunning natural landscape. The sunrise or sunset views from the summit are nothing short of breathtaking.

Halfeti and Gaziantep: Halfeti, known as the “sunken city,” offers a unique experience with its partially submerged buildings due to a dam. The serene boat rides on the Euphrates River amidst the submerged ruins are unforgettable. Gaziantep, famous for its culinary delights, boasts a rich history reflected in its museums, ancient sites, and vibrant markets showcasing traditional crafts and cuisine.

“After a recent familiarisation trip to Istanbul with Turkish Airways and Birmingham Airport, we were lucky enough to meet Merve and see her passion for the city and country.

Her tours were interesting and relevant and we visited some of the city’s most prestigious hotels and sampled some amazing food under her watchful eye.

She was more than a host, I know if I have any queries or questions re Istanbul or Turkey she will be my first port of call!”
