Wilderness Awaits

Alaska’s Untamed Beauty by Car

Discover the awe-inspiring beauty of Alaska at your own pace on this carefully curated self-drive adventure. Following a network of the state’s most iconic Scenic Byways—such as the Richardson, Parks, and Seward Highways—you’ll encounter an ever-changing backdrop of snow-capped peaks, glacial valleys, and vast, untouched wilderness. This flexible itinerary allows for spontaneous stops, whether you’re pausing to photograph a mirror-still lake, enjoy a roadside café, or marvel at a moose crossing your path.

Adding depth to your journey are unforgettable experiences that bring Alaska’s spirit to life. Take to the skies on a scenic bush plane flight from Chitina to the remote town of McCarthy, where a guided tour of the historic Kennicott copper mill reveals a fascinating past. Then, delve deep into the wilds of Denali National Park by guided bus, keeping a watchful eye out for bears, caribou, and the elusive Denali peak. With the freedom to explore and the comfort of a planned route, this is Alaska in its most authentic form.

All the things you need to know

On arrival, make your way to your hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax. If time allows, perhaps visit the Alaska Botanical Garden or take a trolley tour. This evening, sample fresh Alaska ingredients at one of the many restaurants and bars or take in a dinner theatre.

The next day, drive to Sheep Mountain, a scenic gem nestled along the Glenn Highway in Alaska. This area is known for its dramatic landscapes of multicoloured mountains, glacier-fed rivers, and open tundra teeming with wildlife. Stretch your legs on one of the nearby hiking trails, such as the Sheep Mountain Ridge Trail, which offers sweeping views of the Matanuska Glacier. Keep an eye out for Dall sheep grazing on the rocky slopes and golden eagles soaring overhead. It’s a peaceful, picturesque stop that captures the raw, unspoiled beauty of Alaska’s interior.

Spend two nights in the remote wilderness of McCarthy and Kennicott, nestled within the vast expanse of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. This area offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance.

Explore the Kennicott Mines National Historic Landmark, where you can tour the well-preserved 14-story concentration mill and other remnants of the early 20th-century copper mining era.

For adventure seekers, guided hikes on the nearby Root Glacier provide an up-close experience with the icy landscape, featuring deep crevasses and stunning blue pools. Flightseeing tours offer a bird’s-eye view of the park’s towering peaks and expansive glaciers, while rafting trips on glacier-fed rivers provide a thrilling way to experience the area’s natural beauty. In the evenings, relax in the rustic charm of McCarthy, enjoying local hospitality and the serene surroundings.

Drive north to Fairbanks, the gateway to Alaska’s interior and a fascinating blend of frontier spirit and Arctic adventure. Known for its long summer days and spectacular winter auroras, Fairbanks offers unique cultural and natural experiences year-round. Visit the Museum of the North to explore Alaska’s rich history and art, or take a ride on the Riverboat Discovery for a glimpse into the state’s Gold Rush heritage. Relax in the nearby Chena Hot Springs, famed for their healing waters and ice museum, or stroll the downtown area for local galleries, shops, and cozy cafes. Keep an eye out for moose along the way—you’re deep in Alaska’s wild heart.

Denali National Park offers an unparalleled immersion into Alaska’s untamed wilderness. Spanning over six million acres, the park is home to North America’s tallest peak, Denali, standing at 20,310 feet. Visitors can traverse the Denali Park Road via shuttle or guided bus tours, providing opportunities to spot the “Big Five”—grizzly bears, moose, caribou, Dall sheep, and wolves—amidst breathtaking landscapes of tundra and towering mountains. For a unique perspective, flightseeing tours offer aerial views of the park’s vast expanse, with options to land on glaciers for an unforgettable experience.

Nestled in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, Wasilla and Palmer offer a scenic glimpse into Alaska’s agricultural heartland, framed by the Chugach and Talkeetna mountain ranges. Visit the Musk Ox Farm or the Alaska State Fairgrounds, or simply enjoy the charm of local markets, small museums, and panoramic hiking trails nearby.

Today discover Seward, a picturesque port town on the Kenai Peninsula, which is a gateway to spectacular marine and glacier experiences. Stroll along the waterfront, visit the acclaimed Alaska SeaLife Center, or embark on a cruise through Kenai Fjords National Park to witness calving glaciers and abundant wildlife.

Homer, known as the “Halibut Fishing Capital of the World,” offers stunning views of Kachemak Bay and the Kenai Mountains. Explore the charming town, visit the iconic Homer Spit, or enjoy outdoor activities like fishing, kayaking, and wildlife viewing in this scenic Alaskan haven.
