Itinerary

Overnight flight from London (regional connections available) direct to Ho Chi Minh City with Vietnam Airlines. (N)

 
 
Morning arrival. Transfer to the Caravelle Hotel* (or similar) for 2 nights. Afternoon city tour with visits to the Reunification Palace, Notre Dame cathedral, the War Remnants Museum and a former safe house used by the Viet Cong. Welcome dinner at a local restaurant. (D)

Full-day exploration of the Mekong Delta, including a trip to Cai Be, a boat ride exploring the smaller channels and walking in the countryside. (B, L)

 

Morning drive through the southern Vietnamese countryside and visit the Cu Chi tunnels. Continue to the airport for an afternoon flight to Hue. Stay at the Azerai La Résidence* for 2 nights. Dinner this evening will be at a restored royal home of the Nguyen dynasty. (B, D)

Morning visit to Hue citadel, which encompasses the numerous pavilions, temples and courtyards of the former Imperial City, including the Purple Forbidden City. Continue to Thien Mu pagoda, then take a short cruise on the Perfume River back to the city centre. In the afternoon, visit the tombs of the Nguyen emperors Tu Duc and Khai Dinh. (B)

Morning drive over the spectacular Hai Van Pass (weather permitting) to Hue, visiting the Museum of Cham Sculpture in Danang en route. Afternoon at leisure. Stay 3 nights at the Hotel Royal Hoi An*, within walking distance of the UNESCO-listed Hoi An Ancient Town. (B, L)

Morning tour of the ruined temple of My Son. Lunch at Streets International restaurant, a social enterprise initiative with the purpose of developing sustainable programmes for street children. In the afternoon, take a walking tour of the former trading port of Hoi An, which has historic Chinese, Japanese and European influences

Day at leisure. Optional classes at the Red Bridge cooking school (payable locally). 

Fly to Hanoi and transfer to the Sofitel Legend Metropole* for a 2-night stay. Optional evening excursion to a water puppet show (payable locally). 

Begin the tour this morning at the National Museum of History and then visit the 900-year-old Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s principal Confucian sanctuary and its historical centre of learning. Made up of five courtyards, this is one of the few remnants of the original city. Afterwards a visit will be made to the Ngoc Son Temple, located in the middle of Hoan Kiem lake, which translates to ‘lake of the restored sword’. Lunch will be taken at the Koto restaurant (which stands for ‘Know One, Teach One’), a training centre and restaurant that provides vocational training for underprivileged youth.

Cruise today in an area similar to Halong Bay but with far fewer visitors, known as Lan Ha Bay, in the Gulf of Tonkin. Stay overnight onboard the Heritage*

You will be collected from the marina, and taken to the Oriental Jade hotel, where a day room is available for you to rest before your flight home. You will be collected from your hotel and taken to the airport.
