Itinerary

Collect the car at Keflavík airport. Continue along the south coast to Hveragerði or Selfoss area

Visit the impressive Gullfoss waterfall and Geysir hot spring area, home to the famous Strokkur geyser, and explore Þingvellir National Park.

Travel through the area where the Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupted in 2010 and visit Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, stop to search for puffins at Dyrhólaey and stroll along the black beach in Vík.

Explore Skaftafell National Park. Enjoy a glacier walk or spend the day hiking to the numerous attractions in the park.

Drive to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and take an optional boat tour amongst the icebergs. Continue to Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull and onwards to the town of Egilsstaðir.

Explore Lake Lagarfljót , drive to the large dam at Kárahnjúkar and hike to Hengifoss waterfall.

Cross the highland mountain pass, Möðrudalsöræfi and stop for homemade waffles at the mountain café Fjalladýrð. Enjoy the surrounding vista before continuing to Iceland’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss.

Explore Mývatn, an area known for its spectacular geology, geothermal heat and the large number of ducks nesting by the lake. Discover pseudo craters at Skútustaðir, lava formations at Dimmuborgir and enjoy an optional soak in the Mývatn Nature Baths.

This morning explore Húsavík, known as the capital of whale watching. Book an excursion by an electric boat and enjoy the silence so you can hear the whales as they come to the surface. Located so close to the Arctic Circle, there are usually hundreds of whales in the fjord during summer. Perhaps visit the whale museum located at the harbour too, but an absolute must in Húsavík is to relax in the soothing geothermal heated infinity pools at Geosea, with amazing views over the fjord. In the afternoon drive to Skagafjörður area with a stop in Akureyri, or the fishing villages of Dalvík and Ólafsfjörður.

Continue exploring the peninsula and perhaps stop to the small town of Hofsos for a dip in the local pool.

Head to Snaefellsnes Peninsula and cross the Laxárdalsheiði heath to the Haukadalur valley to visit a replica of a Viking farm.

Hike along the coast from Arnarstapi to Hellnar, stop for a break at the friendly coffee house Fjoruhusid and drive around the tip of the peninsula.

Drive to Reykjavík and spend the afternoon exploring the Icelandic capital.

Return the car to Keflavik airport and fly to the UK.
