You will only propose to her – or him – once, so we think it’s worth it to put a little extra thought and investment into it. You’re reading this, so chances are you agree.
You’ve put some time into the ring, no-doubt, and the words you’ll say, and now it’s time to choose the location. It will be one of those permanent images on your loved one’s memory, and on yours, so make sure it’s someplace special – and that it suits the one you’re asking.
You might also want to return there, for a second-honeymoon, or to show the grand-kids where it all officially began. There are a lot of places to choose from, literally hundreds that could embody most of what you want to set the mood for the proposal itself, and one of them will tick all the boxes.
You’ll want the right spot, but you’ll also want the right means of getting there, a great place to stay, and perhaps something a bit special to mark the event as different from other holidays.
It can be overwhelming.
But don’t worry; you have help. We understand how important this decision is, and place our experience and expertise at your disposal. We can help you find what it is you’re looking for, even if you’re not yet sure what that is.
We’re a phone call or email away. In the meantime, here are a few of our favourites.
It’s no surprise, and we won’t apologise for it. The Eiffel Tower, lit at night, is still an icon of all that romance means. You can get priority access to the second level for under forty pounds each. Look over the buildings and parks, and soak in the aura of the City of Love. What better way to set the tone for your grand gesture?
If you really want to go all out, hire a photographer to take images of the tower from down below at the time you pop the big question. Those images on your wall at home will keep the romance fresh in your minds for years to come, and will capture the experience in a way the selfies will miss (but take those too!).
Any trip to Paris offers other benefits as well, the Louvre, walking the river, the food and wine. Great for this trip, and for later years too.
Here is another of the top players when it comes to iconic romance. Kneeling on a gondola as it glides through water, the sights and sounds of Italy fanning the flames of romance and passion… not a bad image to mark the beginning of your married life together.
If you time things right, you can have a photographer on a bridge here, snapping a few shots both before and after the moment itself. Arranging an intimate meal for afterwards – maybe with live violin music – will add yet another layer of magic to the day.
Maybe you love the romance… but you also want something a bit more unique or unpredictable? An excellent choice is the Neuschwanstein Castle, just outside of Hohenschwangau, in southern Germany.
You might not know the name, but you likely know it by sight. It was built in the 19th century, and designed to embody all the fantasy and romance of a fairy tale. The result is so successful that Walt Disney used it as the inspiration and template of his own fairy-tale castle at Disneyland.
To make it even more special – and to give yourself an excellent gift idea for later anniversaries – buy some high-end chocolates or pastries that you’ll be able to order from home in years to come. One look, one taste, and your partner will be transported back to that special moment again.
Romance isn’t the same thing for everyone. It doesn’t always revolve around man-made structures or cities. If your idea of romance takes an outdoor turn, then it doesn’t get much more romantic than a stunning display of Northern Lights with volcanoes towering up in the foreground. For that, Iceland is the place.
It will be cold, and some find the beauty of it a bit desolate, but for those that understand the power and unbridled nature of the place, it is a truly awe-inspiring location.
Don’t hide from it. Go in the winter, spend what it takes for the warmest outdoor clothing, get a luxurious and beautiful room, and you’ll be able to immerse yourselves in the power of nature – before returning to celebrate in the soft luxury of the best comforts available.
At the other end of the romance pendulum is Hawaii. The name is synonymous with warmth, sunshine, beaches and fresh fruit (often in drinkable form for grown-ups).
There are many locations to choose from too. Lanikai Beach is a contender for top spot, as is Sunset Beach, both on Oahu. Nakalele Blowhole, in Maui, has a heart-shaped hole in the lava rock that is a popular spot for romantic selfies. Want to show the fire in your heart? The Jaggar Museum Overlook on the Big Island will bring some thrill to the moment, as the two of you watch actual lava glow and smoke in the cool twilight.
Best of all, revisiting the spot of your marriage proposal is an excellent excuse to revisit these beautiful islands when the winter rains need banishing.
For the very best in a combination of luxury and outdoor fun, few places can compete with the Maldives. You can choose from gems like Meeru Island, Maafushi, one of the twenty resorts of the Ari Atoll… and that just begins the list. Your travel expert will help you find the right one, but let us pique your interest with an image or two.
Picture stepping out onto the private balcony of your pier-side room, soft sounds of water lapping against the shore, and a thousand glittering stars lighting that special meal. After a day of fun and sun, a cool vibe like that might be the perfect setting to ask that biggest question.
Santorini – Greece
A few nights in Imerovigli or Oia will fan the passion of any couple, and the backdrop of ancient buildings will add a visual component to that sense of lasting commitment.
With white-washed walls and sapphire domes atop them, both villages are known for amazing views. Whether taken in from the lip of an infinity pool, or over the white linen of a fine meal, the view over the bay is stunning, studded with the jewelled lights of passing ferries and yachts in the distance, and bathed in the clean, fresh sea air.
Few places on earth are as steeped in history as Greece, so why not begin your history as a married couple in this iconic, romantic location?
Langkawi – Malaysia
Malaysia is one of those places that deserves a lot more press than it gets. From the lush green of the hills to the white-sand beaches and turquoise waters, land-lovers and water-lovers alike will sink down into their beach chairs with smiles on their faces and peace in their hearts. It is a geographical cocoon of relaxation.
Your day of hiking, swimming, and water sports – or lounging in the sun with a slushy glass of luxury – can culminate in a romantic dinner or beach-side walk, letting the beauty and natural music of the island set the mood for the proposal – and for the night afterwards.
That ideal experience can mark the beginning of your married lives together, and be a special spot to return to, rekindling the fire in years to come.
Martinique – Caribbean
This last suggestion lies in the Lesser Antilles of the eastern Caribbean Sea. The heady blend of Caribbean and French culture make this both a comfortable and exotic setting for the big question.
The island is part of the European Union, so travel and currency are easily sorted. Once there, the burnt-umbers and flashes of white buildings amid the dark green jungle rising behind them will immediately envelop you in the ambience of French tropical life. Excellent food and wines, white-sand beaches, coconut palms swaying in the breezes…
Some visitors complain that not enough English is spoken on the island, but it is France, after all, and the little additional effort it takes for an English-only speaker to function in that environment is more than compensated for by the additional privacy you’ll enjoy. This trip is about the two of you, no one else, and the romance of location, purpose, and even language will serve to set the mood as you muster up the courage to take a knee, bring out the ring, and ask that special someone to share your life.
The Choice is Yours
If none of these quite hit the mark for your vision of what that day will look like, don’t despair. These are just a few of the hundreds of amazing locations in which to ask the biggest question of your life.
