Memories that will last a lifetime
“I’ve been fortunate to visit some of the most captivating places on earth, but my recent trip to Jordan with Wendy Wu Tours truly stands out as a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From the bustling streets of Amman to the serene waters of the Dead Sea, every moment of this journey was filled with awe and adventure. Join me as I take you on this mesmerising trip that took me through the sights of Jordan.
Our journey began at London Heathrow Terminal 3. Excitement buzzed in the air as I met the other people on the tour who I would be experiencing the next week worth of adventures with. We checked in for our Royal Jordanian flight and before we knew it, we were airborne, heading towards the capital – Amman. After a smooth flight, we transferred to the stylish Ambassador Boutique Hotel where takeaway dinner boxes and comfy beds were waiting for us.
The first full day in Jordan started with a hearty breakfast before heading to Jerash, often referred to as ‘the Pompeii of the East.’ Walking through this ancient Roman city, I was struck by the incredible preservation of its ruins. From Hadrian’s Arch to the Temple of Artemis, every corner told a story of a bygone era. Lunch at Um Khalil Lebanese restaurant was a delightful introduction to the diverse cuisine that Jordan has to offer, and I was only too happy to indulge in the various appetisers and grilled meats that our table quickly became laden with!
In the afternoon, we returned to Amman for a city tour. The blend of ancient ruins like the Roman Amphitheatre with modern city life was fascinating to see. Dinner and drinks at Mejana Restaurant capped off a perfect day with the group, and watching the sun set over the impressive city skyline really was the cherry on top.
Day 3, following breakfast we set off for Mount Nebo, the biblical site where Moses is believed to have viewed the Promised Land. The panoramic views from the summit were breathtaking, and the ancient mosaics added a touch of history to the serene landscape. Our next stop was Madaba, known for its stunning Byzantine mosaics, including the famous Madaba Map which dates back to the 6th century AD and is known to be the oldest depiction of the Holy Land that still remains in existence!
By evening, we arrived in Petra and checked into Petra Moon Hotel. The highlight of the day was a Levantine cooking class where I learned to prepare traditional dishes under the guidance of a local chef. The evening was filled with laughter as our group bonded (mostly over our ability or inability to chop and season vegetables to the chef’s liking correctly) and somehow the end product created was not only edible, but delicious and so no one returned to their rooms hungry.
Day 4, we discovered Petra by day and night. Petra, the “Lost City of the Nabateans,” was everything I had imagined and more. As we walked through the Siq and the iconic Treasury emerged, I think it’s safe to say that we all felt a sudden surge of emotion. The intricate carvings and majestic structures were nothing less than awe-inspiring. Pictures and videos can’t do this place justice, but I still made sure to take hundreds of them!
In the evening, we returned to Petra for the infamous candlelight tour. The sight of the Treasury illuminated by thousands of candles was magical, creating a mystical atmosphere that lingered long after we left.
Day 5, a day of adventure in Wadi Rum. The day started with a visit to Little Petra, a lesser-known but equally fascinating Nabatean site. Then, we journeyed to Wadi Rum, the “Valley of the Moon.” This desert landscape, with its towering sandstone mountains and vast sand dunes, was the epitome of Arabian romance.
A thrilling 4×4 ride took us through the desert, visiting sites associated with Lawrence of Arabia and the Great Arab Revolt. A sunset camel ride and chance to sip tea with some of the locals made the adventure even more special. As night fell, we arrived at our desert camp, where we enjoyed Bedouin hospitality and gazed at the stars in the clear desert sky. The experience of staying in a Bedouin tent was both luxurious and authentic, making it a night to remember.
Our last full day consisted of a day of relaxation at the Dead Sea. Leaving Wadi Rum, we headed north to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. The high salt content made floating effortless – I can’t begin to describe how strange it feels to bob around in the water with a total feeling of weightlessness! After we’d had enough of this, we smothered ourselves in the mineral-rich mud mask that the Dead Sea is renowned for and spent the rest of the afternoon basking in the sunshine with our newly rejuvenated skin!
On day 7 it was time to say farewell to Jordan. Our final morning in Jordan was spent with a delicious group breakfast before we made our way to Queen Alia International Airport for the flight back to London.
It’s needless to say that the memories of the stunning landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality of the Bedouin people will stay with me until I one day have the opportunity to visit this incredible country again!
This trip with Wendy Wu Tours was a journey of discovery and delight, one that I highly recommend to anyone seeking an unforgettable adventure.
