All the things you need to know

Arrive Reykjavik, transfer to the hotel and check in for 4 nights.

Spend the morning exploring the shops, galleries and cafés of Reykjavik at leisure before an excursion to the famous Blue Lagoon. Relax in the healing geothermal waters and apply the rejuvenating white silica mud to face and body. After dark, head out on a Northern Lights coach tour to search for the aurora away from the bright lights of the city

Today take a coach excursion to Iceland’s most popular trio of natural wonders. Discover Thingvellir National Park where the North American and Eurasian continental plates drift apart, get up close to Gullfoss waterfall and see Strokkur geyser erupt twenty metres into the air. Visit Fridheimar greenhouse cultivation centre, one of Iceland’s biggest greenhouses, before returning to Reykjavik.

After breakfast, reach Reykjavik Domestic Airport by taxi on your own and fly from Reykjavik to Akureyri by plane in only 45 minutes. On arrival, transfer to the hotel in Akureyri and check in for 3 nights. Spend the rest of the day at leisure and, in the evening, drive out to the countryside away from the city lights on a guided hunt for the elusive Northern lights.

Enjoy a guided tour to one of Iceland’s most fascinating and enchanting areas, Lake Myvatn. Visit Godafoss waterfall, Skutustadagigar pseudo-craters and the mystic Dimmuborgir (Dark Castles) – a series of lava pillars and strange formations. Stop at the warm underground river in Grjotagja rift and have a walk through the geothermal area of Hverir with its boiling mud pools, steaming fumaroles and sulphur pits. En route back to Akureyri stop at Myvatn Nature Baths where you may soak in its relaxing geothermal waters.

Spend the day at leisure to explore Akureyri under your own steam or embark on an optional excursion*. Akureyri, often tagged with labels such as ‘capital of North Iceland’, lies at the base of Eyjafjordur, surrounded on either side by a sloping wall of snow-capped mountains. The town clings to one hillside before spilling on to a small stretch of land that seems to float upon the shimmering water – hence the name ‘Akur-eyri, or ‘the field upon the shoreline’.
