Itinerary

Maximise your time with an overnight flight to Guayaquil.
Relax on arrival at your hotel and spend the day at leisure or explore Ecuador’s largest city, Guayaquil. Enjoy views of the Guayas River as you walk along the Malecón 2000 boardwalk before stopping to eat a traditional humitas. Visit the Metropolitan Cathedral and Tower Morica before buying an authentic panama hat direct from the factory.

Today, you’ll be exploring the landmarks of Guayaquil with your expert guide. Your city tour will take you to Seminario Park, better known as Las Iguanas Park, due to the large population of iguana that roam free. Enjoy the artisan scene of sculptures and street art as you make your way to South Market in Malecón 2000. Explore the old neighbourhood of Las Peñas or climb to the top of the lighthouse on Santa Ana Hill. Finish your day among roses at the flower market.

After a short flight to the Galapagos Islands you’ll be taken to your boutique expedition ship for your four-day cruise. Start your adventure around this volcanic archipelago, which inspired Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, at the tiny islet of Mosquera where you can swim and snorkel in the crystal-clear waters. Keep your eyes open for sea lion, turtle, dolphin and orca.

Walk in the footsteps of Darwin along the black beach of Puerto Egas (James Bay) on Santiago Island. The trail will take you across the volcanic terrain, which is home to the bizarre yellow-crowned night heron and marine iguana. After a swim, you’ll head to the iron-rich red island of Rábida where you’ll find brown pelican and nine species of Darwin’s finch. Stop off at a salt pond to observe the greater flamingo before snorkelling in one of the best sites on the island.

Arrive at Urbina Bay on Isabela Island and discover a myriad of wildlife which lives among the skeletal coral garden. Located on the south-east side of Alcedo volcano, the area was thrust upward from the sea by volcanic activity in 1954, and is home to giant tortoise and marine iguana. Head north to Tagus Cove for an uphill trail to Darwin’s salt-water Crater Lake to enjoy the volcanic views. Spot the Galapagos penguin during a dinghy ride along the coast.

Today, you’ll be hiking through youngest island of the archipelago, Fernandina home to La Cumbre Volcano. Discover more about the ecosystem which is the perfect environment for animals such as flightless cormorant, large marine iguana and Sally Lightfoot Crab. Spend the afternoon snorkelling at Punta Vicente Roca Point where you can see turtle. Learn more about the island’s rock formations from your guide during a panga ride along the coast. Look out for blue-footed and Nazca boobies and pelican. .

Today, you’re heading to the Tortoise Reserve of Santa Cruz to observe these gentle giant, which can weigh up to 300kg, in their natural habitat. Watch as they lumber around eating and wallowing in the small pools. During your day spotting wildlife look out for highland birds such as cattle egret, Galapagos rail, finch and vermilion flycatcher. After weighing anchor and saying a final goodbye to this unique ecosystem you’ll be flying back to Guayaquil.

After a final chance to stroll through the atmospheric cobbled streets of Paraty, we take a bus down the Atlantic coast to Angra dos Reis. This will be our gateway out to Ilha Grande, a beautiful island preserve of spectacular scenery, unspoilt beaches and atmospheric ruins. The island is car free which adds to its relaxed ambience. We take a public boat from Angra dos Reis later this afternoon, travelling the short distance to the colonial port of Vila Do Abraão (about 1.5 hours), a picturesque coastal town lying beneath the shadow of towering mountains. On arrival, we will walk to our bed and breakfast with luggage transported in a baggage cart.
Toast your expedition to this iconic part of the world during the flight home.
