Let the magic of this Central Asian gem inspire your next adventure!

Why we love Uzbekistan!

Uzbekistan is a country that captivates the heart with its stunning architecture, rich history, and warm hospitality. My adventure began with a 5.5-hour flight aboard Uzbekistan Airways, flying over the Netherlands, Poland, and Russia before arriving in Tashkent at sunrise. The plane, a modern Dreamliner, came equipped with in-flight entertainment, plenty of food, and even peanuts with drinks—a quirky touch.

Arriving in Tashkent

Tashkent greeted me with a smooth immigration process, no visa requirements, and a modern airport. A word of advice: if you’re traveling from the UK, ensure your phone is unlocked before you leave or consider getting an eSIM in advance. Local SIM cards are inexpensive (I found one with 50GB of data for just £7), but a locked phone can be a hurdle.

Our guide, Donat Iskanderov, whisked us away to the luxurious Lotte Hotel. Once a retreat for Russian dignitaries, it features grand interiors, comfortable beds, and a serene outdoor pool. My room offered a balcony view of the gardens, and its location—opposite the Alisher Navoi Theatre—was perfect for exploring the city.

Exploring Tashkent

Tashkent, a mix of ancient traditions and Soviet-era influences, was a delight to explore. We visited the Old Town, including the Abu Bakr Kaffal Shashi shrine and various madrassahs, before diving into the vibrant chaos of Chorsu Bazaar. This massive domed market buzzes with life, offering everything from spices, bread, and produce to unique bamboo cribs for infants.

These cribs, designed for babies as young as 10 days old, have a fascinating setup: a hole in the mattress, a collecting bowl, and a bamboo pipe for hygienic diaper-free days. Babies are snugly strapped in, encouraging restful sleep and allowing families to focus on daily tasks—a practice rooted in centuries-old traditions.

Tashkent’s metro is clean, efficient, and surprisingly beautiful, blending modern trains with historic charm.

Samarkand: Jewel of the Silk Road

No trip to Uzbekistan is complete without visiting Samarkand, home to the iconic Registan Square. This majestic center of learning, flanked by stunning madrassahs and minarets, is even more breathtaking when lit up at night.

Other highlights included the Shah-i-Zinda Necropolis, a street lined with dazzling blue-tiled tombs, and the Ulugh Beg Observatory, where 15th-century scientists mapped the stars under the visionary ruler Ulugh Beg. Samarkand’s blend of history and beauty left me in awe.

Practical Tips and Final Thoughts

Traveling through Uzbekistan is safe, affordable, and endlessly rewarding. The Spanish-designed fast trains between Tashkent, Bukhara, and Samarkand are comfortable and efficient, making it easy to explore multiple cities. Each destination deserves at least three nights to fully absorb its beauty and history.

Whether you’re admiring the sweeping views from the Tashkent TV Tower, shopping for ceramics at artisan studios, or marvelling at the remnants of the Silk Road’s legacy, Uzbekistan is a country that stays with you long after you leave. The warm hospitality, rich history, and unforgettable landscapes make it a must-visit destination for any traveler.

So, what are you waiting for? Uzbekistan is calling!” ~ Lesley

Hotels I Recommend:
  • Tashkent: Lotte Hotel – Luxurious, central, and incredibly comfortable.
  • Bukhara: Hotel Shariston – A charming rooftop restaurant and great location within the old town.
  • Samarkand: Hotel Kosh Hovuz – Lovely courtyard, though beds are quite firm.
