Eurostar passengers will be fingerprinted twice as part of a new check-in system that authorities say will boost security. The upcoming implementation of the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES), will affect Eurostar travel procedures starting 10 November 2024.

What is the EES?

The EES is a new EU border security measure that replaces the physical stamping of passports. It involves collecting travellers’ biometric data (fingerprints and facial images) to enhance security and improve border management.

What to Expect for Eurostar Passengers

While the EES introduces a five-step check-in process, Eurostar has taken significant steps to ensure a seamless experience for passengers:

  • Pre-travel Information: Clients will receive detailed travel guidance explaining the EES and what to expect at check-in.
  • Faster Check-in: Eurostar has invested in additional automated kiosks and staff to expedite the process. Passengers can expect check-in times to remain within the current range (45-90 minutes for standard class, 20 minutes for first class).
  • Clear Guidance: Stations will have clear signage and staff readily available to assist you with navigating the new system.

The Five-Step Check-in Process

  1. Automated Kiosks: At St Pancras Station, register your passport, provide facial images and fingerprints, and answer some quick trip-related questions using the kiosks.
  2. Ticket Gates: Proceed to the Eurostar ticket gates 45-60 minutes before your departure time.
  3. Security Checks: Clear standard security checks for your luggage.
  4. UK Border Exit Checks: Pass through UK border control as usual.
  5. French Border Entry Checks: Upon arrival in France, passengers (especially first-time travellers) will provide fingerprints and a facial image for French border control.

Addressing Potential Delays

We understand concerns regarding potential delays. Eurostar has proactively addressed this by:

  • Conducting passenger flow simulations to optimise check-in procedures and staffing levels.
  • Doubling the number of check-in booths and adding e-gates for faster processing of frequent travellers.
