Why we love Malta!

I have recently enjoyed a great three days in Valletta, Malta. A beautiful and historic island, full of many surprises.

My Maltese adventure kicked off at the magnificent Iniala Harbour House which is set atop Valletta’s St Barbara Bastion. The views of the Grand Harbour and the historic Three Cities from the hotel are breath-taking and its location gives direct access to Valletta as soon as you step out. When I arrived at the hotel I realised that this was going to be an indulgent stay. An added bonus when staying at the INIALA Harbour Hotel, is access to the facilities of Gracy’s… a private members club, which offers the well-heeled a sanctuary of privacy and delicious cuisine. Again, Gracy’s is in a great location overlooking St George’s Square and is the perfect place for friends, family and colleagues to enjoy a seriously good dining experience or drinks at the bar.

During my visit to Malta, I enjoyed a delightful dinner at The Phoenicia Hotel, which let me tell you, was amazing and a culinary experience to remember. This hotel is a much loved and iconic landmark of the island and boasts The Queen amongst its many guests of stars, socialites and crowned heads of Europe over the years.

The main highlights of my visit were a guided tour of the Three Cities and Valletta, which is  like stepping back in time as you wonder around Ta’Liesse, a Baroque masterpiece, and across the Grand Harbour by boat to the historic trio of Vittoriosa, Senglea and Cospicua. Exploring Valletta’s rich history on a walking tour, with the blend of medieval, Knights of St. John and British influences which are what make Valletta a truly unique capital city. If you can, you should also head to Mdina, a captivating ancient walled city, and home to another of the islands Michelin-Starred restaurants, The de Mondion Restaurant at The Xara Palace Relais & Chateaux. This is a must try if you enjoy a fine dining experience and the panoramic views from the terraces just add to its romance. Another trip back in time and one for those that love to visit World Heritage Sites is Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Archaeological Park, a megalithic temple complex, being one of the most ancient religious sites on Earth.

For those that like to indulge in local wines then I highly recommend a visit to the Ta’Betta Wine Estate. A beautiful private estate, amongst stunning countryside and home to the most delicious Maltese wine. Ta’ Betta is not generally open to the public, but that said, exclusive wine-tasting and wine appreciation events can be booked on request.

You may have heard of the famous Blue Grotto… well let me tell you, this did not disappoint. Head to Zurrieq for a boat ride which takes you to this beautiful spectacle. The Blue Grotto is a number of sea caves and is popular amongst visitors, not only for the caves but for diving, snorkelling and swimming as the waters are very clear, clean and deep.

I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the little island of Malta proudly boasts six Michelin-Starred restaurants. Another one being the ION, award-winning signature restaurant at the INIALA Harbour House. Chef Simon Rogan’s farm-to-table philosophy is notably pioneering and celebrated on the island. So if you can, try the tasting menu… just make sure you have loose clothing on. What a way to end a wonderful few days, with memories of Malta’s grandeur and hospitality.

I haven’t visited Malta since I was a child, and was surprised at how much Malta has to offer for all ages. From shopping, sightseeing, and relaxing. I can absolutely say, that I actually fell in love with the island, in particular Valletta. A vibrant city full of energy, hustle and bustle of everyday life, a café culture that you simply cannot resist and very cosmopolitan.

Malta is the perfect destination for a short break, with plenty of history, character and charm and as it holds it weather later into the year, September, October and November are ideal months to visit if you are wanting some late sunshine. It’s a big yes from me!” ~ Karen
