Places to visit in Iceland
The Capital Reykjavik
The most northerly – and one of the most difficult to spell – capital cities in the world, Reykjavik is a buzzing place with a lively nightlife and great music scene. Add in the excellent museums, great shopping and omnipresent coffee houses and you get a sense of why the Icelandic capital is such a popular place to live. Put on a lopapeysur wool jumper and listen to locals tell tales of the huldufólk (hidden people).
Take a Dip in the Blue Lagoon
You will discover Iceland’s geothermal waters throughout the island, but the ultimate hot water experience is in the Blue Lagoon, close to Keflavík airport. Incredibly relaxing, and a great way to recover from the night before, relax and get to know the locals.
Off the Beaten Track in Westfjords
Visit the west of the island to really get away from it all, and see the spectacular fjordheads plummet down into the deep blue sea. To the north the Hornstrandir peninsula is like a journey’s end as trails lead off through pristine wilderness and Arctic fox scamper through the snow.
Kayak through Jökulsárlón
You might recognise it from Batman Begins or Die Another Day, but Jökulsárlón is no film set. Icebergs drift through the lagoon before continuing their progress into the Atlantic. Either take a boat trip, kayak or wander around the shore. Whichever you choose prepare to be awed.
Escape to Snaefellnes
With its own stack of bird sanctuaries, wild beaches, and lava fields, the Snaefellnes Peninsula is dubbed ‘Iceland in Miniature’, even down to its own national park and volcano. Come here for a day trip from Reykjavik and see why Jules Verne decided to choose Snaefellsjökull as his doorway to the centre of the Earth.

Experience the Northern Lights
If seeing the Northern Lights is not on your bucket travel list, then why not? Watch the night sky dance with ethereal veils of red, violet and green as solar flares are drawn to Earth by its magnetic pull. The Northern Lights can appear anytime between mid-September and mid-April. Just keep your fingers crossed and hope for a clear night.
Drive Iceland’s Ring Road
It might not be Route 66, but Iceland’s Route 1 makes for an incredible road-trip, and great way to see the island. Pass by overflowing waterfalls, glacial icecaps and mossy lava fields, to experience the wonder of Iceland’s natural beauty to the full. But don’t forget to follow the minor tributaries that flow from the country’s main artery and discover Iceland’s untainted wilderness.
Discover Vatnajökull National Park
The largest national park in Europe, Vatnajökull covers some 14% of the total island. Vatnajökull itself is the largest icecap outside of the North and South Pole, from which flow scores of glaciers, and underneath which are still active volcanoes. Follow the walking trails for the ultimate fire and ice experience.
Go Whale Watching
Many species of whale pass by Iceland’s shores, including the Blue Whale. You might be lucky enough to spot them from land, but if not take a whale-watching trip from Húsavík or other towns in the north of the country, as well as the capital. Combine this with some bird watching – colonies of puffins congregate at the island’s many cliffs.
